How TuteNest works
Search for what you need, or read through. These are the questions teachers and students actually ask.
Getting started
How do students join my batch?
Every batch you create gets its own six-character join code. Open the batch and share the code once, usually in the class WhatsApp group.
Students enter that code when they sign up, or from Batches then Join batch if they already have an account, and they land straight in the right class. You do not have to collect their details one by one.
You can also add a student yourself with just their name and phone number. If that student later joins using the code and the phone number matches, the two records link up automatically.
Can I add a student myself instead of waiting for them to join?
Yes. Open the batch and add them with just a name, plus a phone number if you have one. They show up straight away and you can mark their attendance and raise their fees like anyone else.
One thing to know: a student you added by hand has no login yet, so WhatsApp and email notices do not reach them. The app shows them as unregistered until they sign up themselves with the join code. If the phone number matches, the two records link up on their own and nothing is lost.
How do I set up my first batch?
From Batches, tap New batch. Give it a name your students will recognise, such as Class 10 Physics, set the default fee, and pick how often that fee repeats: monthly, quarterly, yearly, or one time.
You can rename a batch or change its fee later without affecting invoices you have already raised.
I have just signed up. What do I do first?
Three things, in this order. Create your first batch. Share its join code with your students. Add your UPI ID under Settings then Payments, so students know where to pay.
After that the daily use is small: mark attendance, post an agenda if you want to, and raise invoices when the month turns. Nothing happens automatically and nothing is sent without you pressing a button.
Can I rename a batch or change its fee later?
Both, from the batch page. Renaming changes only the name: attendance history and invoices already raised are untouched.
Changing the default fee applies to invoices you raise from then on. Invoices already raised keep the amount they were raised at, so a price change never quietly rewrites what someone already owes.
A fee cannot be set above one lakh rupees. That is a guard against a slipped extra zero, not a judgement about your pricing.
How do I delete a batch?
From the batch list or the batch page. A batch that still has students in it cannot be deleted; remove the students first.
That rule is deliberate. Deleting a batch outright would take its attendance and fee history with it, so the app makes you empty it first rather than letting one tap erase a term's records.
How do I join my teacher's class?
Ask your teacher for the batch join code. It is six characters long.
Enter it while signing up, or if you already have an account, go to Batches and tap Join batch.
You can be in more than one batch, and in batches from more than one tuition centre. Everything shows up in the same account.
How do I join another batch?
Go to Batches, then Join batch, and enter the six-character code your teacher gives you. It appears in the same account alongside the others, so you do not need a second login.
Attendance
How do I mark attendance?
Open Attendance, pick the batch, then pick the day on the calendar. Each student gets two buttons: P for present and L for leave. Anyone you do not mark simply has no record for that day.
Mark all present sets the whole batch in one tap, so you only have to change the few who were not there.
Students see their own attendance the same day, so there is nothing to circulate afterwards.
What is the difference between present, leave and absent?
Present means they came. Leave means they were expected but did not come, and the teacher knows why.
A day you never marked is simply blank. It is not counted as absent, so forgetting to mark a day does not quietly damage anyone's record.
How far back can I change attendance?
Today and the six days before it. That is long enough to fix a mistake you notice a few days later, without leaving your whole history open to accidental edits.
Days older than that are read-only. If something genuinely needs correcting further back, email us and we can look at it.
I marked the wrong student. Can I change it?
Yes. Go back to that day and tap the correct status, or unmark the student entirely. There is no time limit and nothing is locked.
A student told me they will be absent. Can I let their parent know?
Yes. Mark the student on that day, then send the leave update from the same row. It goes to that one student's contact, not the whole batch.
It is one message per student per day. Toggling them between present and leave afterwards will not send it again, so the button cannot be used to fire repeated messages at a parent by accident. It costs one message from your wallet.
How do I mark a holiday or close for a few days?
For a single day, open that day in Attendance and choose Mark as holiday. You can then send a holiday update so parents know before they set out.
For a longer closure, use Add a break. Pick the first and last day, tick the batches it applies to, and optionally send one notice covering the whole span. A break can run up to 60 days.
TuteNest does not hold a recurring weekly timetable, so there is nothing to edit afterwards. Holidays and breaks are one-off closures.
We are closed for a week. Do I have to mark every single day?
No. Go to Attendance, then Mark a break, pick the first and last day, and tick the batches it applies to. Every day in the range is marked closed in one go.
A break can be up to sixty days long, which comfortably covers a school vacation. You decide whether students are told about it: there is a switch for that before you confirm.
What is the daily agenda?
The agenda is a short note of what a session actually covered. Teachers add it from the day's attendance screen.
Students see it on their own attendance calendar, so anyone who missed a class can tell exactly where the batch has reached without having to ask.
What is an agenda for?
It is a short note about what a class covered on a given day. Teachers post it, students read it.
It is most useful for someone who missed the class, and for a parent who wants to know what is being taught without having to ask.
How do I set homework and get it marked?
Open the batch and tap Homework. Give it a title, a due date, then add your questions one at a time. Each question takes your own answer and how many marks it carries, and the total is added up for you. Everyone in that class sees it on their dashboard and on the batch, and types their answers there.
Write your answer for each question if you can. It is what the marking is judged against, and without it the draft falls back to general subject knowledge. Students never see it.
When work comes in, open the homework. You can type the marks yourself question by question, or tap Let AI draft the marks and get a suggested mark and a comment for every question at once. That costs 25 paise from your WhatsApp wallet per student, whatever the number of questions, and nothing is charged if it fails.
You decide either way. The suggestions sit beside each answer and never fill the mark boxes on their own; Use these suggestions copies them in so you can change them. Nothing reaches the student until you release, and you can change a mark afterwards, which simply shows them the newer one.
The screen also lists, by name, everyone who has not handed in yet.
Does the AI decide my students' marks?
No. It drafts, you decide. The suggestions are labelled on your screen and sit next to each answer; the student sees nothing at all until you put in marks yourself and release them.
That is deliberate rather than cautious. A mark on a child's work is something a parent may ask you about, and it should be yours to explain. Use this draft copies the suggestion into the mark and comment boxes so you can edit it, but you always press release.
The student's name is never sent for marking. The question, your answer key and their answer are, and nothing else.
How do I hand in my homework?
Homework your teacher has set shows on your dashboard with its due date. Open it, type an answer to each question and hand it in.
You can keep changing your answers right up until your teacher marks them, so handing in early costs you nothing. Once marked, you see your mark for each question, any comment your teacher left on it, and your total.
Your answers are typed, not photographed, so write them out rather than attaching a picture of your notebook.
How do I run a live quiz in class?
Open Live quizzes and tap New quiz. Pick the class, give the quiz a name, then add your questions one at a time: the question, two to five answers, and a tick on every answer that is correct. You can give each question a countdown of ten to sixty seconds, or no timer at all if you would rather decide yourself when to stop taking answers.
When you have added them all, tap start. A QR code and a six-character code appear on your screen. Hold it up or read the code out, and you will see each person's name arrive as they join.
The Live quizzes screen lists only quizzes still to run, marked Lobby, Running or Not started. Once you finish one it moves to Results with its scores, so the list stays a list of what you can start rather than a history.
You control the pace. Tap Start question 1 when the class is in, and each person answers on their phone. You can see how many have answered and which names are still outstanding, so you know whether to wait, and the countdown ticks down on your screen and theirs. Tap Show the answer and the right ones turn green on everybody's screen, including yours. Then Next question. After the last one, Finish clears the question away and shows the scores.
Every question is worth 100 points, so a total reads as a count: nine right out of ten is 900. How fast someone answered is recorded but does not change their score, so nobody is punished for thinking.
You can tick more than one answer as correct. The class is told how many a question has and may pick that many, and they score the share they find: one of two is 50, two of three is 66, all three is 100.
Picking anything wrong scores nothing for that question, however many right ones came with it. So a guess that casts a wide net is worth less than an honest partial answer, and the class is told this before they answer. Leave at least one option wrong on every question.
There is a Present full screen button at the top right of the quiz screen. It hides the menus and fills the screen, so you can put the quiz on a projector without your own navigation showing. Press Escape or Leave full screen to come back.
Can students without an account take part in a quiz?
Yes. Anyone who scans the QR or enters the code can take part, including students you added by hand who have never signed up.
They are asked for their name before they can answer, so nothing is anonymous and the scores still tell you who did what. A student who is already signed in skips that step and takes part under their real account name, which they cannot change.
Can a student change their answer in a quiz?
Yes, until you move on. They can tap a different answer for as long as that question is still taking answers, which ends when you press Show the answer or Next question, or when the countdown runs out.
After that it is locked. Nobody can see whether they were right until you reveal it, so there is never a point where someone can correct an answer they have already been told was wrong.
Scoring does not depend on how quickly they answered, so changing their mind costs nothing but the chance to change it again.
Can I run a quiz that is not for one of my classes?
Yes. In the class dropdown when you set the quiz up, choose Not a class, just this quiz. Everything else works the same: a code, a QR, the lobby, the questions and the scores.
The difference is what happens to the answers. With a class, a signed-in student's answers are filed against their record in that class. Without one, nobody is filed against anything, so it suits a workshop, a training session, a staff room, or a group that is not enrolled with you at all.
You do not need to have created any class to use it, so this is also the way to run your very first quiz before you have set anything else up.
Can I run the same quiz again, or restart one that went wrong?
Yes. Open the quiz and tap Start this quiz again. You get the same questions with an empty lobby and a new code, so the class rejoins and you begin from question one.
The run you are leaving is kept rather than wiped, so nobody's answers are deleted and the old scores stay in Results. If the restart turns out to have been the mistake, the original is still there.
Because the code is new, anyone already on the old one has to scan or type the new code.
Where do I find the scores from a quiz I already finished?
Results, at the top right of the Live quizzes screen. It lists every quiz you have finished, newest first, with the date and time it ended and how many people took part.
Finished quizzes live only there. The Live quizzes screen shows the ones still to run, so what you see on it is what you could actually start right now.
Open one and you get the full table: everyone who took part, their score, how many they got right, and their rank. People on the same score share a rank.
Scores are kept for a year after a quiz finishes, then deleted.
How long are quiz results kept?
One year from the day you finish a quiz. After that the quiz, its questions and everyone's answers and scores are deleted and cannot be recovered.
If you need a record beyond that, write the scores down before the year is up. A quiz you have never finished is not deleted, however old it is.
My teacher gave me a code or a QR for a quiz. What do I do?
Scan the QR your teacher holds up, or open the link and enter the code. If you are not signed in to TuteNest you will be asked to type your name first, so your teacher knows who answered.
Then wait. Your teacher decides when each question appears, and it comes up on your phone on its own. Tap your answer and it is sent straight away.
Every question is worth 100 points, so nine right is 900. You can tap a different answer to change your mind while the question is still open.
Some questions have more than one right answer. Those say so on your screen and let you pick that many, and you get the share you find: one of two is 50, two of three is 66, all of them is 100. On those, tap your answers and then press Send.
But if any of your picks is wrong, that question scores nothing at all, even if your other picks were right. So pick only the ones you are sure about: one right answer on its own beats one right and one guess.
You will not know whether you were right until your teacher shows the answer. At the end you see your own score and where you came, not anyone else's. Finish top and you get a winner's rosette on your screen.
Where do I see my attendance?
Open the Attendance tab. You get a month calendar for each batch you are in, with holidays marked and a dot on any day that has an agenda note.
Tap a day to see how you were marked and what was taught.
Can I see who else is in my batch?
Yes, on your attendance page. You see their names and nothing else: no phone numbers, no attendance, no fees.
You can only see this for batches you are actually in. There is no way to look up another centre's students.
Fees and payments
How do I raise this month's fees?
Open Payments and pick the batch. The button raises invoices for the whole batch for the current cycle in one action.
It is safe to tap twice. Running it again will not create duplicate invoices for students who already have one for that period.
What does the fee cycle on a batch mean?
Right now it is a label, not a schedule. It records how you think about your pricing (monthly, quarterly, yearly or one-time) and is shown next to the fee on the batch.
Invoices themselves are always raised per calendar month, and only when you press the button. Nothing is billed automatically and the cycle setting does not change what gets raised. If you bill quarterly, raise the invoice in the month you want to collect.
How do students pay me?
Set your UPI ID once under Settings then Payout settings. Students then see a UPI link and a QR code against each unpaid invoice, and the money goes directly from them to you. TuteNest never holds your fees.
After paying, a student taps I have paid. That shows up on your Notifications screen as a payment to confirm. You confirm it as UPI or cash, and a receipt goes out automatically.
If you confirm the wrong one, there is an undo.
A student paid me in cash. How do I record it?
Open the batch's fees list and mark that invoice paid. You choose whether it came by UPI or cash, and for UPI you can note the reference number so you have something to match against your bank statement later.
Only your confirmation moves an invoice to paid. A student saying they have paid shows up as something for you to check, it never marks itself. If you tick the wrong one, there is an undo.
Where do I set the UPI ID students pay into?
Settings, then Payments. The UPI ID you put there is what students see on their fee page, and it is the only place the app stores it.
Money goes from the student straight to you. TuteNest never holds it, never takes a cut of it, and never sees the transaction.
What is automatic collection, and can I use it yet?
It is the option for students to pay their fees online inside the app, with your share settling to your own bank account instead of you chasing UPI transfers.
It is not switched on yet. Our payment provider is still verifying the account, and until that finishes the setup screen will not accept your bank details. If you have already tried and seen an error, nothing is wrong with what you entered.
For now, keep collecting the way you do today: students see your UPI ID on their fee page and pay you directly, and you mark the invoice paid. We will tell you when automatic collection is ready. Email care@tutenest.com if you want to be told first.
How do I pay my fees?
Open the Fees tab. Each unpaid invoice has a UPI link and a QR code for that particular tuition centre, so if you attend two centres you pay each one separately.
Pay using any UPI app, then come back and tap I have paid so your teacher knows to confirm it.
Where can I see what I have already paid?
Your fees page lists the last twelve billing cycles across every centre you attend, with what is paid and what is still owed.
A paid row shows when your teacher confirmed it. If you paid but it still shows as owed, your teacher has not marked it yet; tapping that you have paid puts it in front of them.
I have paid but it still shows as unpaid
Payments are confirmed by your teacher rather than detected automatically, so there is a short gap between you paying and the status changing.
Make sure you tapped I have paid on that invoice, which is what puts it in front of your teacher. If it still has not changed after a day, mention it to them directly.
How do I see who has not paid?
Open Payments. It shows what is pending and what has been collected, and you can open any batch to see which students are still owing and for which months.
Nothing marks itself paid. An invoice only moves once you confirm it, so the list is as accurate as your own record-keeping.
I marked the wrong invoice as paid. Can I undo it?
Yes. Open the same invoice and undo it, and it goes back to pending.
Invoices themselves are not deleted. That is deliberate, so a month's billing history cannot quietly disappear; an invoice raised in error stays visible as unpaid.
How many fee reminders can I send?
Up to ten rounds per batch per billing cycle. The button shows how many you have used, so you can see at a glance where you are.
One tap messages everyone in that batch who still owes, rather than you picking students individually.
Messages and notices
How do I put a notice up for a class?
Open the batch and tap Notice board. Write a heading and the notice, and put it up. Every student in that class sees it on their dashboard straight away.
A board is per month. Whatever you put up goes on this month's board, and next month starts a clean one, so nothing from August is still sitting there in November. You can look back at an earlier month from the row of months above the board, and anything still worth saying you simply put up again.
A board holds twelve notices. To change one, take it down with the cross in its corner and put up a new one. Taking a notice down removes it for good.
It is a board, not a message: nothing is sent, no WhatsApp or email goes out, and nothing comes out of your wallet. Students see it the next time they open the app.
What is the notice board on my dashboard?
It is where your teacher puts up anything the whole class needs to know: a test coming up, a day off, something to bring.
It shows this month's notices for your class. At the start of a new month the board is cleared, so if something still matters your teacher will put it up again.
Nothing you do there is sent to anyone. It is just for reading.
What messages does TuteNest send?
Over WhatsApp and email: your login code, a note when an invoice is raised, fee reminders, a receipt when a payment is confirmed, leave notices, holiday and break notices, and birthday wishes.
Messages go out from a business number, not from a teacher's personal phone.
TuteNest does not send marketing messages, and every email carries an unsubscribe link.
Can students or parents reply to the WhatsApp messages?
They can press reply, but nobody will read it. Messages are sent from a TuteNest business number, and replies to it do not reach the teacher.
If a parent needs to tell the teacher something, they should contact the teacher the way they normally would. Students can also use the app itself to say they have paid a fee, which puts it in front of the teacher.
What does each WhatsApp message cost?
A few paise each, taken from your wallet as they go out. The exact figure is shown on the wallet screen along with roughly how many messages your balance covers.
You are only charged for messages that are actually sent. Nothing is charged for using the app, marking attendance or raising invoices.
A student did not get my message. Why?
Only students who have actually joined with the code can be messaged. If you added someone by hand and nobody has signed up against that row yet, there is no account to send to.
The screen tells you how many students were reached after each send, so a number lower than your class size usually means some have not joined yet. Share the join code with them again.
What is the WhatsApp wallet?
WhatsApp charges per message, so TuteNest keeps a small prepaid balance per centre and deducts about ₹0.16 for each one sent.
You can see the balance in three places without going looking for it: a tile on your dashboard, which also tells you roughly how many messages it still buys, the WhatsApp wallet row in Settings, and the wallet screen itself. It turns red on the dashboard and in Settings once it is running low.
New centres start with ₹20 of credit, which covers roughly 125 messages.
Self-serve top-up is not switched on yet. If you are running low, email care@tutenest.com and we will sort it out.
What happens if my wallet runs out?
WhatsApp messages stop going out. Nothing else is affected: attendance, fees, invoices and the app itself all carry on working exactly as before.
You get a low-balance warning in the app before it gets there, and the message buttons tell you up front when you cannot afford to send to a whole batch, rather than sending to some students and failing partway.
How much can I add to my wallet at once?
Between twenty rupees and five thousand rupees in one go. You can top up as often as you like, so the ceiling is per payment, not per month.
Five thousand rupees is already tens of thousands of messages at the per-message cost, so the limit is there to catch a slipped extra zero rather than to ration anything.
Can TuteNest remind me to mark attendance?
Yes, but only inside the installed Android app, which is still in testing. It can nudge you in the evening when a batch still needs its attendance or agenda filled in, and ahead of a closed day or a student's birthday.
You can switch each of those four reminders on or off under Settings then Notification settings. In a browser there is no evening nudge, though the Notifications screen still shows everything that needs you.
Can I turn some of these reminders off?
Yes. Settings, then Notifications. You can switch off closed-day reminders, student birthdays, missed attendance and missed agenda independently.
These are reminders for you, not messages to students. Turning one off never changes what a student or parent receives.
Where do I see what needs my attention?
The bell icon. It gathers the things waiting on you: attendance you have not marked, agendas you have not posted, and payments a student says they have made but you have not confirmed.
Below those it shows what is coming up, such as birthdays and holidays in the next week. Opening the page clears the badge.
Your account
I forgot my password
On the sign-in screen, continue with your phone number or email and choose to get a code instead. The code arrives on WhatsApp or by email and lets you set a new password.
How do I log out?
Open Settings and use Sign out at the bottom.
Signing out does not delete anything. Log back in with the same number or email and everything is where you left it.
Can I use my account on my phone and my laptop?
Yes, at the same time if you like. It is the same account and the same data, so anything you change on one shows on the other.
Can I sign in with Google or Apple instead of a password?
Yes, both are on the login and signup screens. If you already have a TuteNest account with the same email address, signing in that way connects to the account you already have rather than making a second one.
How do I change my phone number or email?
Under Settings then Profile. Changing a phone number asks for a code sent to the new number, so the account stays tied to something you actually control.
How do I change my name or my academy name?
Settings, then Profile. Tap the pencil next to whichever one you want to change.
Teachers see two fields there: your own name, which is what students see next to messages, and your academy name, which is what appears on invoices and in WhatsApp notices. A name can be up to 50 characters and an academy name up to 100.
Can I use dark mode?
Yes. Settings then Appearance, where you can pick light, dark, or follow whatever your phone is set to. The choice is per device.
How do I delete my account?
Settings then Delete account. You will be asked for a code to confirm it is really you.
Teachers have to delete or hand over their batches first, so that a class full of students does not disappear along with the account.
About TuteNest
What does TuteNest cost?
There is no setup fee and no subscription. Creating a centre, adding batches, marking attendance, raising invoices and using the student app are all free.
The only running cost is WhatsApp messaging, which is charged per message from a small prepaid balance and starts with ₹20 of free credit.
Fees paid by students go straight from them to their teacher over UPI. TuteNest does not take a cut and never holds the money.
Who can see my students' information?
Only the centre it belongs to. A teacher sees their own batches and nobody else's, and one centre's data is never visible to another.
Students see their own attendance, agendas and fees, plus the names of people in the same batch. They cannot see another student's attendance, fees or contact details.
Bank details entered for automatic collection are sent to our payment provider and are not stored on TuteNest beyond the last four digits, which is there so you can tell which account you used. Full details are in the privacy policy, and you can email care@tutenest.com to ask what we hold about you.
Which devices does TuteNest work on?
Any browser, on a phone, tablet or laptop. Nothing to install and nothing to keep updated.
An Android app is in testing and not on the Play Store yet. An iOS app is on the roadmap. Until then an iPhone runs the web app in Safari, and it is the same product.
What time zone are the times in the app?
Indian Standard Time, always, wherever you happen to be reading them. A payment stamped 7:15 pm means 7:15 pm in India.
This is deliberate: a tuition centre, its teachers and its parents are all on one clock, so a shared record of when something happened is more useful than each device showing its own local time.
Does TuteNest handle exams, marks or homework?
Not today. TuteNest deliberately covers the everyday running of a centre: attendance, fees, notices and the daily agenda.
There is no exam or marks entry, no report cards, no homework submission, and no recurring weekly timetable. If those matter to you, it is worth knowing before you move your centre across.
Something looks wrong. How do I report it?
Email care@tutenest.com and say what you were doing when it went wrong. A screenshot helps more than anything else.
If it involves a particular student, batch or invoice, naming it means we can find it straight away instead of asking you follow-up questions.
Can I suggest something you should build?
Please do. Email care@tutenest.com and describe the problem you are trying to solve rather than the feature you have in mind. Knowing what is slow or annoying in your day is far more useful to us than a list of buttons.
Is TuteNest available in Hindi or other languages?
The app itself is in English today. It is built to be read easily by someone whose first language is not English, with short sentences and plain words rather than jargon.
WhatsApp notices are also in English. If a language would make a real difference to your centre, email care@tutenest.com and tell us which one.
I attend two different tuition centres. Does that work?
Yes. Join each one with its own code and they all appear in the same account. Attendance, agendas and fees stay separated by centre, and each centre's fees are paid to that teacher directly.
Is my data safe if I lose my phone?
Yes. Nothing is stored only on your phone. Attendance, fees and everything else live on our servers, so a lost or broken phone costs you nothing but the phone.
Sign in on any other device and it is all there. If you think someone else has access to your account, change your password from Settings straight away.
Can I just ask a question instead of reading?
Yes. On this Help screen there is a round chat button in the bottom right corner. Tap it and ask your question in plain words, the way you would ask a person. It opens in a window over the page, so the list of articles stays where it was behind it.
If you go off to try something and come back within a few minutes, the conversation is still there, so you can ask a follow-up without explaining it all again. Leave it longer than that and it starts fresh.
It answers only from these help articles, so it will not invent a feature that does not exist. When it does not know, it says so and offers to send your question and the whole conversation to our team in the same window, so there is nothing to retype and nothing to copy into an email.
How do I get in touch with a person?
Email care@tutenest.com and describe what you were doing when it went wrong. If it is about a specific student, batch or invoice, naming it helps us find it faster.
Still stuck? Email care@tutenest.com and tell us what you were doing when it went wrong.
